Some Thoughts on ScAlito

Last night, I had a couple glasses of wine at dinner and then sat down to write a long rant about how the extreme right wing always tries to distance itself from its own extreme beliefs. The rant started off this way:

I love the Radical Right. No, that's not right -- I hate the Radical Right. But I love the way the Radical Right apparently hates what it stands for.

Take ScAlito, for example. It is pretty clear that he is about as right-winged as they come -- an extremist's extremist, if you will. And the extreme conservatives in this country are obviously happy that Bush nominated him. They can barely contain their glee.

But when anyone suggests that ScAlito is an extremist, the Radical Right gets all defensive and starts trying to explain away ScAlito's out-of-the-mainstream decisions by arguing that they really aren't as extreme as they appear.

This results in theocratic fascists like Pat "Kill Chavez Now!" Robertson trying to sound like they are actually moderates and that ScAlito is the most middle-of-the-road dude ever to be nominated for the High Court. Let me tell you -- it makes for great comedy.
Well, that is as far as I got, and I put the post aside to finish later. But Armando at Daily Kos has done a much better job making this point than I ever could:

It always amazes me how the Right Wing insists they want judges like Antonin Scalia and then when Democrats liken conservative nominees to Scalia they have hissy fits complaining about the comparisons. Now I certainly think it is a terrible thing for a Supreme Court Justice to resemble Scalia, but when did the Right Wing start agreeing with me on that?
Read the whole thing. It is pretty good.
